What You Are Responsible For:
 
  • Accessions histology and cytology specimens.
  • Assists with Frozen Sections
  • Assists with autopsies under the guidance of the Pathologist.
  • Completes embedding process
  • Completes cutting process
  • Completes various staining procedures
  • Files slides and blocks in the absence of the histology assistant
  • Coverslips, labels, and files completed slides
  • Does Quality Control on equipment and procedures
  • Maintains all Histology equipment
  • Maintains sufficient department supplies
  • Prepares and maintains reagents/stains
  • Complies with department and hospital policies, rules and safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
What You Will Need:
  • Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Use laboratory information systems
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control concepts
  • Grasp of laboratory mathematical concepts
  • Vocabulary to include medical terminology
  • Critical thinking / problem solving skills
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Teamwork, tact and conflict resolution
  • Laboratory information systems
  • Organizational / multitasking skills
  • Use of electronic communications (i.e. email)
  • Ability to respond appropriately to buzzers, bells, flashing lights, and pagers.
  • Completion of Histology training or experience (as required for Florida Histology Technologist License)
  • Associate of Science degree or higher (Preferred)
  • State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the specialty of Histology Technologist
  • HTL (ASCP or equivalent) Board Certification (Preferred)
